Under- 8 News   16/04/2015

As you know we made great progress last with each boy making significant strides in acquiring the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude to develop into an accomplished hurler and footballer. This year the team is participating in the Rebel Og competitions at under 8 level which are the stepping stone for each boy to eventually play at Senior Level for the Barrs. THE STORY SO FAR IN 2015……….

THE STORY SO FAR IN 2015……….

FOOTBALL TRAINING: 6 pm each Friday
HURLING TRAINING: 10 am each Saturday

We started back indoors in January 2015 in the newly re-developed clubhouse hall. We had four weeks of Olympic Handball, striking against nets, indoor hurling and gymnastic exercise. The players found this to be a most enjoyable sessions and it built on the fundamental movement training which this group have been participating in for the last two years. The focus of fundamental movement is to develop the boys’ locomotive skills like jumping, dodging, skipping and rolling. These are skills that perhaps aren’t being developed as naturally nowadays with children enjoying more sedentary lifestyles. However, the emphasis in the under 8 coaching group always has been and will be on the children having fun. The fun on the astro pitch re-commenced on Saturday 28 February. We have had four sessions of hurling and four sessions of football since then with the emphasis again on fundamental movement and game based development. We had our first Monster Blitz in football on 28 March in St Vincents with 27 players attending and each player getting three matches. A comment from one player was that “we beat everybody, even Arsenal” (one Blarney GAA player had an Arsenal jersey) !!
