INTRODUCTION

Ar son an Choiste Feidhmiúcháin fearaimid fíor chaoin fáilte romhat go dtí ár gCruinniú Bliantiúil. Gabhaimid buíochas leat as ucht bheith comh fiail le do chuid ama chun freastal ar an gcuinniú seo. On behalf of the Executive Committee we would like to extend to you a very warm welcome to our AGM. Many thanks for taking the time to attend this meeting.

TRUSTEES

The trustees of our Club are Donal Hurley, Tony Maher, Gerald McCarthy, Jim Harrington, Frank Murphy (Coisde Chondae Chorchai) and Simon Moroney (Coisde na Mumhan). We acknowledge the valuable contribution the Trustees make to help our club remain at the forefront of Gaelic Games provision.  

DEVELOPMENT

The resurfacing of our club car park was completed this year in addition to the final work on our Ball Alley. Continued prudent fiscal management and increased revenue from various sources, not least increased  membership, will be needed to continue to up -grade and renovate our premises to meet the needs of all our members, both playing and non playing. The re-roofing of our pavilion remains a priority while we hope to conclude the fencing of pitch 2 early in 2017. This work has been held up due to protracted legal negotiations at local and state level.

SECRETARY/MANAGER

Martin Murphy has responsibility for the day to day administration of our Club, the management of Club staff and allocating times for the use of our facilities. Martin will continue to facilitate playing sections in the provision of training times for the astro pitches, in addition to facilitating section related events where the club bar and provision of food and entertainment is required.

GROUNDS/FACILITIES

A year round programme of management of our playing pitches under the supervision of Stephen Forrest has been in operation in the last year and for the most part the surfaces have been satisfactory. Continued effective feeding, cutting and aerating will be needed to maintain quality playing surfaces. Our thanks to the following for their unstinting efforts in ensuring the quality and availability of our pitches for our playing sections

FINANCE – SOURCES OF INCOME

Bar:
The club Bar continues to be a valuable source of income, though we continue to trade in challenging times. The most significant sources of revenue are now from events such as birthday parties, anniversaries, communion celebrations, christenings and not least funerals. Other recent events such as boxing fundraisers have also added to our income. We encourage club members and friends to support our club by using the club facilities for family events and celebrations. The secretary manager welcomes enquiries and will facilitate all requests.

Fundraising:
The revenue generated from fundraising is now critical to club finances. The trojan work of the Fundraising Committee is acknowledged, as now being a core contributor in generating valuable income. We extend our appreciation to the committee for their unstinting hard work. Activities undertaken during 2016 included Spinathons, National Club Draw, Golf Classic, and Night at the Dogs, Ladies Mini Marathon, Walks, Raffles and various Collections. Cheques were presented to the following charities: Guide Dogs for the Blind, Marymount Hospice, Pieta House, the MS Society and Arc House. Our club members’ Appreciation Night was held on Saturday, 17th December 2016

Fundraising Committee:Paul Goggin, Anne Burns, Ann Finn, Rachel Myers-Murray, Claire Barry, Chris Buckley and Ted Power.

Membership:
Membership of Cumann Fionnbarra Naofa is mandatory for all players and mentors. If players have not paid their membership fee by the end of March of the current year they are not covered by the Player Injury Scheme and are ineligible to participate in training or matches. In addition all mentors, coaches and trainers should also be fully paid up by the 30th March. We ask that all sections would ensure that this is adhered to for the coming season. The facility for on line membership registration/renewal, via the club website www.stfinbarrsnhf.ie, is now available while the revised fees approved at the AGM of 2016 are now current. A range of options to facilitate family membership is available, in addition to a 3 month instalment payment facility. To avail of this instalment facility, members must commence on line registration in January of 2017. Full details are posted in the membership section of the website. We gratefully acknowledge the sponsorship of the Lough Credit Union in defraying the costs of our new on line registration facility. A special word of thanks to Colette McCarthy for her work, in developing the on-line membership registration option with MCF, the provider of the service. *Full membership in 2016 was 482 **It is appropriate to acknowledge the excellent work of both of our joint registrars Donie Doolan and Denis O’Callaghan in managing and compiling the relevant data on all club membership to date.

Bingo:
Bingo nights at the Barrs on Friday nights continue to provide a social outlet for members and friends and we are also maintaining our revenue from the event. We also acknowledge that patrons at Bingo purchase a significant number of Lotto tickets, in addition to supporting other club activities and events. Perhaps we can look to increase our revenue in 2017 from this longstanding fun night out !

Club Lotto:
The club Lotto continues to be a guaranteed source of revenue and members are encouraged to support the weekly draw in greater numbers. The option to play the club Lotto on line has the potential to greatly increase revenue and as we now have the capacity to do this through our website etc, we look forward to extending this option to members during 2017. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the hardworking Lotto committee.

Cork G.A.A. Draw:
This draw still remains a relatively untapped source of funding. We have 338 members at present and while the numbers are satisfactory (in relation to neighbouring clubs); we should be encouraging more members to enter the draw. Recent comments from members suggest that interest in this draw is waning due to the poor quality of prizes and limited success for our members! Our continued thanks go to this hardworking group.

Club Shop:
This is a most valuable facility in the club not least for the younger members who really enjoy wearing the variety of Barrs gear. It is potentially a lucrative source of income and it will be a focus for the executive in 2017, to build on the good foundations that have been laid by Martin and the support team.

Sponsorship:
We acknowledge the valued financial support to our club of Ryan’s Supervalu, Hegarty Financial Services and latterly Lough Credit Union. In addition the following companies have renewed their agreements, for the next 5 years, in respect of on pitch signage- O’Connell Butchers, Heineken Ireland/Beamish, Murray Browne, Declan O’Connell & Co. - A number of the existing sponsors will renew agreements in early 2017, while we also welcome a number of new sponsors (Tyre World). Further sponsorship possibilities/initiatives will be considered by the executive during the coming months.

PLAYING SECTIONS

Sincere thanks to all the Officers, committee members and players of our Senior Hurling, Senior Football, Senior Camogie, Juvenile Camogie, Camogie Street League, Barrs Og and Street League sections for their outstanding voluntary efforts on behalf of our Club members and families. We acknowledge the success of; the u21A football county winners, J2 football (Seandun), u13 & u15 (Seandun) camogie, Aoife Downey plate (Senior camogie) ‘B’ county minor league (camogie) & u15 football county winners (Rebel Og).
A special word of thanks, to each representative from the playing sections, for their valued time and contributions at Executive Committee meetings.  Maith sibh.

OTHER SECTIONS

The following sections and groups continue to provide a sporting and leisure outlet to club members and the wider community and we acknowledge the contribution that each makes in making Cumann Fionnbarra Naofa a true community.
Ladies:
Our thanks to the Ladies’ Committee for catering for our players, visiting teams and functions when called upon. Their hard work is very much appreciated.
Squash:
Current membership is 28.
Handball:
Current membership is 18.
Indoor Bowls:
The members of this section continue to enjoy their bowls on Monday and Thursday nights and selected mornings.
Road Bowling:
This section continues to provide a valuable recreational outlet for interested members of all ages both male and female.
Finally, our thanks to Brian Clarke and Jack Walsh, who organise weekly cards, on each Wednesday and Saturday.

HEALTH PROMOTING CLUB:

The work of this group is rightly seen as ground breaking by both the GAA and health professionals. The activities promoted by the team are many, with varied benefits and outcomes to members and the local community clearly evident. The Healthy club project is now in phase 2 and partnerships are in place with the HSE, Healthy Ireland, and the National Office for Suicide Prevention support the programme.  We are one of 60 clubs participating in the project and the team continue to work at making the Barrs a healthier place for all. The main events this year were;
Dermot Early Intiative; This project allows club members develop leadership potential through facilitation with NUIG and a number of young club members have participated and graduated in the programme during 2016.
Stress Control Workshop; We joined forces with the HSE again this year to deliver a 6 week course, free of charge, to teach participants the skills to effectively tackle stress.
Safe Talk Training; Suicide Alertness for Everyone is a training programme that helps identify those who may be having thoughts of suicide and teaches ways of helping those people by connecting them with suicide first aid resources. Two successful nights were held in the club and were very well attended.
Healthy Eating; The  HP team worked with the Feile panel as part of the Fit4Feile scheme, the SH panel had an enlightening visit to Supervalu Togher where they had a nutrition talk and interesting aisle walk, while additional support was also given to our Senior camogie team.
Fruit for Street League Training; Supervalu came on board in 2015, and continue to sponsor our fruit programme for the Street Leagues. Each week they sponsored two boxes of fruit for use after Street League training on Friday evenings and Saturday. Fruit was also provided during the Cúl Camps in the summer.  We are very grateful for this sponsorship and the children really enjoy their piece of fruit after training. We are indebted to the hardworking Health Promotion team for their outstanding work in developing health awareness in our club and beyond.

CLUB MASS

Our annual Club Mass was celebrated on Monday, 29th November, 2016. Barrack Street Band provided some wonderful music to embellish the occasion while the Togher Parish Choir also enhanced the remembrance ceremony. Thanks are extended to all who took part by doing readings, bringing up gifts, etc. We acknowledge the excellent efforts of Jamsie O’Sullivan and his team for setting out the Hall, many thanks to Marian McCarthy for providing the flowers and to the Ladies Committee for providing refreshments on the night. Our gratitude also to our chief celebrant An t-Ath. Ó Murchú, and his team which consisted of; Fr. O’Donoghue, Fr. Brophy and Fr. Twomey. We will look next year at broadening the appeal of this important event in particular to encourage greater numbers of our younger members to participate 

COMMUNICATIONS

The revised and upgraded Club website is fully operational and members can now easily access a wide range of information and news. In addition, our Twitter and Facebook pages are very popular and provide up to date and accessible data on all playing activities. The online membership registration and renewal is also now live while future potential in providing club Lotto on line will be looked at in 2017.

CHILD PROTECTION/WELFARE

Our club CPO Ken McCarthy has developed an excellent programme for mentors and parents to highlight the welfare and protection issues for our young players. All sections are advised to be aware of such events/seminars in 2017 and in particular; to ensure that all coaches and mentors who manage under 18s are Garda Vetted. This is a requirement in law and full compliance is expected.

BEREAVEMENTS

We extend our condolences to those members, players, supporters and patrons of Club activities who suffered bereavements during the year. The annual remembrance Mass provides a unique opportunity for us as a club to commemorate those who have gone to their eternal reward.

We thank each of our colleagues for their generosity of time and energy. We wish them the best of luck in the future; no doubt they will continue to be active in other areas with- in the club

As a final comment it is revealing, in compiling this report, to see the extensive involvement of our members in the many aspects of our club whether administration, coaching, selecting, fundraising etc. We are indeed fortunate that so many willingly give of their time and talents to help maintain our club in a prominent position in Gaelic games and community development. In conclusion, it is appropriate to thank our colleagues on the executive for their valued assistance during the year and their dedication and commitment to fostering the growth and development of our Club.
